R-phycoerythrin (PE) is a stable and highly soluble phycobiliprotein which provides maximal absorbance and fluorescence without susceptibility to internal or external fluorescence quenching, thus providing an exceptional quantum yields and molar extinction coefficients. Human CD52, also known as Cambridge pathology antigen 1 (CAMPATH-1), is a glycoprotein found in the male reproductive tract and immune cells. It is abundantly expressed on the surface of nearly all human peripheral blood lymphocytes. The CD52 antigen is GPI-anchored membrane receptor that consists of a small 12 amino acid peptide attached to a large N-linked carbohydrate group. CD52 is a potent target for inducing cytolysis of mature lymphocytes. Alemtuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting CD52, is used as an immunomodulatory drug for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, T cell lymphomas, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases.
